Four-Day School Week: High Gas Prices Force Rural School Districts To Shorten School Week
High gas prices, which continue to rise even as oil prices fall, are forcing rural school districts to switch to a four-day school week in order to cut back on busing: We've all heard of schools closing because of heavy snowfall, but what about high gas prices?
That's just what is happening in some of the nation's most rural and remote school districts. As the price of gas continues to climb, they're shutting their doors one day a week in order to save on heating and busing costs.
The MACCRAY School District in western Minnesota voted earlier this month to switch to a four-day school week beginning in September. The decision to close the schools on Mondays will mean slightly longer hours on the other four days, but it will also mean a three-day weekend, every week.
"We thought about going to a four-day school week because we needed to save money. We just don't have money and we would like to try to save as many positions as we can in district," said superintendent Greg Schmidt.

J.K. Rowling Writes Potter Prequel
Within the past month, J.K. Rowling has written a prequel to Harry Potter.
And the succinct, 800-word story, written in the author's own hand, will be auctioned off for charity in London on June 10. (The tale is so shrouded in secrecy, it's not even clear if the boy wizard makes an appearance.)
Proceeds will go to the writers' association English PEN and to Dyslexia Action. Fans – who have gone almost a whole year since Rowling's last installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – will be able to read the prequel for themselves when it's published by Waterstone's in August.
In her sign-off to the story (written on a piece of paper not much bigger than a postcard), Rowling said, "That was fun!"

"American Idol" Love: David Cook Goes Out With Kimberly Caldwell
NEW YORK — David Cook says he's dating an "American Idol" alum. The newly crowned "Idol" winner said Tuesday on "Live With Regis and Kelly" that he recently had a dinner date with former "Idol" contestant Kimberly Caldwell.
Cook, 25, said he met Caldwell through the show. When asked if he had a good time, Cook replied: "I did. We'll probably hang out again. So we'll see."
Caldwell, 26, appeared on the second season of the top-rated Fox singing competition.
Cook, from Blue Springs, Mo., defeated 17-year-old David Archuleta last week in a landslide victory. The rocker became the heartthrob of the seventh season around the time he restyled his hair and displayed more confidence onstage.

Daniel Koffler: Hillary Clinton and the Popular Vote: Not Wrong, But Meaningless
Quick math quiz: What is the sum of 5 porpoises, 11 fire engines, the Eiffel Tower, 8 molecules of ammonia on the outermost ring of Saturn, and 13 kiwi fruits? In some sense, it's a collection of 38 things, but the collection is one nobody in possession of his or her wits could possibly take any interest in. The moral of the story is that just because basic arithmetic allows you to add two figures together doesn't mean you should, or that the sum will be meaningful if you do. On the contrary, if you're careless, unscrupulous, or both, the result of your work is liable to be a mereological abortion.
Which is why those folks pushing back against Hillary Clinton's preposterous claims to be leading the national primary popular vote have largely been following the wrong trail, as admirable as their efforts have been. Yes, it's true that to arrive at an aggregation of all the votes cast in all contests that puts Clinton ahead, you have to first assume that "the will of the people," nebulously defined, trumps all considerations of procedural fairness, only to then throw out hundreds of thousands of expressions of popular will in support of Barack Obama on procedural grounds. So that even if the Clinton math weren't a transparently cynical and breathtakingly mendacious display of disrespect for the intelligence of the American people (including Clinton supporters), it would still be flagrantly contradictory on its own terms.
But all that is beside the point because there is no such thing as a meaningful national popular vote in presidential primaries, at least as they are currently constituted -- and in perpetuating the myth that there is such a thing, the media and a surfeit of non-Clinton supporters have played an unwitting role in enabling Hillary Clinton's mendacity to gain a purchase in the national political conversation. Adding together the votes of all the primaries and caucuses and seeing who is ahead is like adding porpoises to fire engines to Eiffel Towers to ammonia molecules to kiwi fruits: the sum is numerical gibberish. The difference between the two cases is that it's easy to disguise national popular vote totals as the addition of apples to apples -- they're all just votes right? -- so that thus far, even those who have noticed that there is something suspicious about the math haven't been able to put their fingers on just what the problem is. While at the same time, the Clintonites have been staking out absurd comparisons of their esoteric arithmetic to bloody struggles for democratic and human rights, in an effort to smother any scrutiny of their popular vote claims. No wonder the Clinton math has gulled so many people; no wonder critics of the Clinton math have been emphasizing secondary points.
To see why the national popular vote in a primary is a case of porpoises plus fire engines rather than apples plus apples, it's helpful to see why the national popular vote in a general election really is a meaningful count. Beyond the emotional manipulation involved in Hillary Clinton's likening of her plight to Florida 2000, the analogy between the general election and the primary is what gets the whole deception off the ground. But a general election for president has two qualities that a presidential primary campaign lacks, and which make it reasonable to talk about the national popular vote in the former but not the latter: (1) all fifty state elections in a general election are synchronic, i.e., they take place at the same time; and (2) the fifty state elections are all open to the same pools of voters and governed by roughly the same procedure.
No two elections that lack either quality can be combined into a meaningful aggregate result. The reason that synchronicity is essential for aggregating elections is that the result of an election is not some Platonic form of the popular will, but simply an imperfect measure of popular preferences at a particular time. Consequently, elections held at different times are measures of categorically distinct things. Suppose the last presidential election had been held in September 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, rather than November 2004. Is there any question that the result in both the popular vote and the electoral college would have been different? Now suppose a group of states with half the American population had voted in November 2004, and the other group had voted in September 2005. In that case, the electoral college results may or may not have been different, but either way, referring to the national popular vote would be utterly senseless. There would be an overall popular vote for the November 04 group, and another for the September 05 group, but adding the two would be a pointless arithmetical exercise, not something anyone could claim with a straight face is a measure of "the will of the people."
Likewise, the results of two elections can't be added together meaningfully if the electorates participating in each contest are incommensurate, or if the elections themselves are incommensurate. Suppose that in the general election, 25 states allowed only men to vote, and 25 states allowed only women to vote; suppose a different 25 states had a minimum voting age of 18 and the other 25 a minimum age of 21; suppose a still different group of 25 states had a maximum voting age of 72. Suppose in half the states, voting meant casting a secret ballot in the ordinary way, and in the other half, voting meant casting a rock in one of two piles like the Athenians used to do. In that case, once again, by electoral college rules, the winner of the most electoral votes would win the presidency legitimately, but it would be risible to say that whoever happened to have received the most total votes had won "the will of the people."
These considerations are straightforward. Anybody arguing that if the winner of the most popular votes nationally in the foregoing scenarios wasn't the same person as the winner of the most electoral votes, then as Hillary Clinton puts it, "the will of the people isn't realized and our democracy is diminished," would and should be laughed off the stage. It's not that electoral college totals in such circumstances are a truer measure of popular will than popular votes. It's that when elections aren't held at the same time, for the same electorate, under the same voting procedures, there is no measure of the overall popular will, whereas electoral votes just happen to be what decides the presidency in our system.
That's why there is no meaningful national popular vote in presidential primaries. The constituent elections of the primaries are diachronic, scattered over five months, and so while it might be reasonable to talk about who had won the most total votes in the February 5 states, who won the overall popular vote between Indiana and North Carolina, etc., it's nonsense to draw any conclusions from the sum of all the votes cast from January 3 to June 3. But that's not all: Whereas any registered voter may participate in a general election by casting a secret ballot, a primary campaign is divided between ordinary elections and caucuses, which are utterly distinct and incommensurate procedures for measuring popular preferences, and so trying to combine them into a total is a priori nonsense. (The Clintonites' Alexandrian solution is to disregard caucuses entirely -- sometimes all the caucuses, sometimes just four -- because, as you know, they care so much about democracy.) Moreover, there is incommensurability between the ordinary primary elections themselves; some are open, some are closed, some are semi-open to varying degrees, meaning that when the overall vote totals are relatively close, asserting that "the will of the people" is for one candidate over the other devolves into nonsense as well.
All of which does not mean that the elected delegate count is a better proxy for "the will of the people" than the popular vote; rather, under the rules that govern presidential primaries, there is no useful or usable proxy for "the will of the people" at all, and the winner of the delegate majority is simply the winner of the primary campaign under those rules. Maybe future primaries should be made democratic, maybe not (I think not, and that the suggestion that they should involves a mistake about what primaries are), but either way, claiming that the delegate count should be overturned in deference to "the will of the people" is simply a shell-game that, as I think I've demonstrated conclusively, doesn't stand up to minimal scrutiny.
So yes, it's grating to hear Hillary Clinton and her supporters claim that she is in ahead in the popular vote, but she is only in a position to make that claim because non-Clinton supporters have preemptively and foolishly acquiesced to the idea that the sum of all the votes cast for each candidate in all the primaries and caucuses is a meaningful and interesting number in the first place. People who persist in arguing that the popular vote is "the will of the people" and must therefore be heeded are entitled to no more or less respect and attention than those who heed the sum of 5 porpoises plus 11 fire engines plus the Eiffel Tower plus 8 molecules of ammonia on the outermost ring of Saturn plus 13 kiwi fruits.

Oil drops below $129 a barrel on demand concerns
AP - Oil prices dropped below $129 a barrel Tuesday, falling sharply on a growing sense that soaring gas and oil prices have cut demand for fuel during the normally busy summer driving season. At the pump, meanwhile, retail gasoline prices rose, but only slightly, leading to renewed speculation that gas may follow the normal seasonal pattern of peaking around Memorial Day and then declining over the summer.

What will Hillary Clinton do?
There's still a week left before the final Democratic primaries take place in Montana and South Dakota, but political pundits everywhere are getting a jump-start on heralding the end of Hillary Clinton's presidential bid. On Tuesday, George Stephanopoulos, a former aide to Bill Clinton, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that the likelihood of Clinton continuing her campaign until the Democratic Convention in August is "zero." And the headline of an AP article says that "the era of big Clintons is soon over."
So if the campaign finally, really and truly will soon be over, what then for Clinton? (Assuming she's the loser, of course -- and most reporters and pundits do assume that at this point.) Articles in both the New York Times and the Washington Post examine Clinton's post-campaign prospects. The articles offer bleak assessments of her career opportunities in the Senate for the near future.
Much of the Post article, written by Shailagh Murray and Paul Kane, compares Clinton's current situation with that of Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1980, after he abandoned his presidential bid. After conceding to Jimmy Carter, Kennedy came back to build a strong career for himself in the Senate. But, as the article points out, Kennedy had been a senator for 18 years at the time he ended his campaign. Clinton will have no such claim of seniority -- according to the Times piece, she currently ranks 36th out of the 49 Democratic senators on that score. Murray and Kane speculate that Clinton may have to forsake the Senate, perhaps in favor of the governorship of New York, to find a post she would deem adequately powerful.
Adding that Clinton "faces few options for quick advancement should she give up her presidential bid," Murray and Kane also cast doubt on the idea that Clinton will become the Senate's majority leader in exchange for dropping out of the race. They write that current Majority Leader Harry Reid has solidified his position in the last 18 months and both Majority Whip Richard Durbin and Democratic caucus vice-chairman Charles Schumer have positioned themselves to be Reid's likely successors if and when the Nevada senator chooses to step down.
Carl Hulse provides a slightly more optimistic analysis in the Times, writing, A "case can be made that her campaign has strengthened her Senate hand. She is now an even more firmly established national figure in her own right, with a defined and substantial following, one of the few in the Senate who can make that claim."
But Hulse then acknowledges that even with Clinton's increased national prominence, her "relatively junior status limits her options in the Senate." She lacks the key council chairmanship position that helps to boost a senator's sway. Whether Clinton will be able to use her clout to leverage a more powerful role in Washington after June 3 will be something to watch for in the weeks ahead.
Clinton may find that, like Thomas Wolfe, she can't go home again. Discussing what it will be like for her to return to the Senate, Hulse writes, "There is also the personal challenge of returning to a club where more Democratic members, some quite pointedly, favored Senator Barack Obama and spurned her. For Mrs. Clinton, who has spent years cultivating friendships and raising money for colleagues, that had to hurt. Though the Senate is a place where rival lawmakers daily work side-by-side, this family feud was more public and pronounced than usual."

On Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres noted that Will and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have been married for 10 years, unheard of in Hollywood. "It's like dog years when you're married here," she said. "That's like 50 years, right? "What I found is divorce just can't be an option," the actor explained. "It's really that simple. And I think that's the problem with L.A. – there are so many options. So a huge part of the success for [Jada] and I is that we just removed the other options."

The Poisoned Fruits Of Denise Richards's Latest Divorce Court Battle: A Reality Show Exposing Her Kids
Denise Richards is making her kids reality television stars and her fuming ex-husband Charlie Sheen is powerless to stop her. Daughters, Lola, 2, and Sam, 3, are headed for Hollywood, as Denise is making the rounds on the nation's talk show circuit this week promoting a new reality show about her home life called Denise Richards: It's Complicated. But what this star is also highlighting is her ruthless decision to showcase her two toddlers on television in an attempt to jumpstart her career.
Denise won a court order allowing her to proceed with filming her life with the children (she has physical custody) as a reality television show for E!, which premieres next week. Charlie had objected, claiming the public exposure is a bad idea that will harm the kids, but a court disagreed. The reason Sheen lost his court battle was because he previously signed a waiver allowing the girls to be filmed. When the show itself became a reality, he apparently changed his mind. But the judge ruled a deal was a deal, and that Charlie had legitimately signed off on the project.
Why would Charlie have signed if he were against his daughters appearing on the show? In my opinion, he probably made a tactical error as his custody battle was ensuing. He may have initially given his consent with the hope of gaining leverage in a "give a little, get a little" move, thinking the reality show would never come to fruition. But Denise eventually successfully inked a deal to air her daily life (as if we are all that interested), and Charlie may have then realized he made an awful mistake.
It seems the so-called bad-boy actor (Denise has accused him of gambling and substance abuse problems, as well as a pornography habit) has really cleaned up his act and made a dead-on correct parenting judgment by attempting to shield the toddlers from a potentially harmful and frightening experience of being followed by television cameras 24/7. (I had a taste of the so-called reality "good life" when I appeared as a contestant on The Apprentice with Donald Trump in 2006. I know what these little girls have in store for them. The lack of privacy and the incessant presence of a camera crew are unnerving and stressful, and I imagine would be especially traumatizing for young children). Moreover, broadcasting the children's images on a national TV show also makes them easier targets for potential kidnappings and paparazzi followings.
Denise Richards appears desperate and is missing the point if she thinks a reality show featuring her children will help her without hurting her kids. With all the previous alleged nasty disclosures painting Charlie as the less effective parent, I am beginning to wonder here if Denise is the one who lacks sound judgment. Is she trying to gain sympathy over her ongoing feud with Sheen and the couple's embarrassing public divorce revelations by turning her agenda into entertainment? It would be a shame if the real reason for making her children TV stars were that complicated.

Sharon Stone Says Earthquake Was "Karma." Outrageous?
Over the weekend at the Cannes Film Festival, Sharon Stone had the opportunity to tell the world exactly how she felt about the earthquake in China (the death toll from which has just topped 65,000). Here's what Ms. Stone had to say:
"Well, you know, it was very interesting . . . I am unhappy about the way Chinese are treating the Tibetans . . . Then all this earthquake, all this stuff happened, I thought, is that karma? When you are not nice, the bad things happen to you." While she did reference the Dalai Lama, and seemed like she was trying to make a point, the flippant delivery or the way she sort of smiled while she was saying it begs the question — is it even possible a natural disaster that killed 65,000 people is the result of bad karma? Then highlighting that she'd put her head down and helped out, even though the Chinese aren't "nice to you," makes one wonder — does Sharon Stone have a point or is she creating a little karma of her own?

Is there really water on Mars?
NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander has just sent back photos of the red planet's surface. From the time astronomers first turned their telescopes on Mars, we have imagined life there. Of course, that would require the planet to contain life-sustaining water. Does it?
Until recently, most people assumed that if Mars had liquid water, it no longer did and hadn't for quite some time. Just a decade ago, scientists speculated that the planet hadn't had liquid water for several billion years. The atmosphere and temperature of Mars makes the idea of liquid water -- or at least water as we know it -- seem nearly impossible. The planet is extremely dry and its distance from the sun keeps the temperature between 22 and -124 degrees Fahrenheit (5.5 and -86.6 degrees Celsius).

Ex-MLB pitcher Gonzalez, 33, killed by lightning
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Former Major League Baseball and Japanese league pitcher Geremi Gonzalez was hit by lightning and killed in his native Venezuela, an official said Monday. The 33-year-old pitcher, who played for five MLB teams, was struck by lightning on Sunday night in the western state of Zulia, said Herman Bracho, the regional emergency management chief. Gonzalez was riding a personal watercraft in Lake Maracaibo at the time, according to Antonio Olmos, a friend who witnessed his death. "It was raining and he got down off his watercraft to grab another one," Olmos told the Venezuelan newspaper Panorama. "At that moment, lightning struck him in the neck and broke a gold chain he was wearing." The account differed from that given by Bracho, who said Gonzalez was on a pier at the beach when struck by lightning. Gonzalez started in MLB for the Chicago Cubs in 1997 and later played with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets. He last played in the U.S. in 2007 with the Toronto Blue Jays during spring training but was released before opening day. He moved to Japan where he pitched in five games last year for the Yomiuri Giants. He also played in Venezuela's professional baseball league, and last pitched this year with the Magellan Navigators.

With season seven of American Idol wrapping up last week (congrats David Cook!), I was completely shocked that a whopping 97 million votes were cast last Tuesday night. From that 97 million, a record-breaking 78 million were generated from text messages through votes, trivia contests, and other SMS content.
When AT&T polled 416 users about their texting and Idol habits, 51 percent said they text more frequently during the Idol season than other times, while 22 percent said they first learned how to text by voting for singers. Although I was totally obsessed with Idol this season, I have to admit that I . . . didn't vote! I know, I know, such an Idol hypocrite. Next season, I promise. What about you? Harry Shearer: Connecting the Absence of Dots
It's probably not escaped your attention that the administration has Iran in its sights. The president, while denying in his Richard Engel interview that the Iraq adventure had strengthened Iran"s position in the Middle East, keeps hammering on the idea that the Iranians are "meddling" in the affairs of their neighbor -- unlike the U.S., which is just helping out thousands of miles from home.
Aside from the issue of Iran's nuclear ambitions, the primary focus of the administration has been on the idea that Iran was training militia members and supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq. So it was doubly curious that this item appeared on an L.A. Times blog early this month: curious because of its content, that a briefing called to publicize the weapons found in Basra made no mention of Iran, and because of its appearance, only on the online edition of the paper, not in print. Yet it did seem kind of newsworthy:
...neither the United States nor Iraq has displayed any of the alleged arms to the public or press, and lately it is looking less likely they will. U.S. military officials said it was up to the Iraqis to show the items; Iraqi officials lately have backed off the accusations against Iran.
A plan to show some alleged Iranian-supplied explosives to journalists last week in Karbala and then destroy them was canceled after the United States realized none of them were from Iran.
Now, at the end of the month, the online site Asia Times has fleshed out the story, with a detailed report on the weapons turning up in Iraq. A sample:
Reports by the US command in Iraq over the past 15 months cited only a handful of Iranian weapons out of hundreds counted in caches found in Shi'ite areas. Nearly 700 mortars and rockets were reported by specific caliber size, along with a handful of RPGs, in nearly two dozen caches. Of that total, only four rockets were reported as being of Iranian origin, and another 15 were listed as possibly being Iranian.
Could it possibly be that the administration's conclusions were reached in advance of, or even iin the absence of, supporting facts? And could it be that the major media don't think of this as a significant story?

What's with the Weather? The La Ni�a-Tornado Connection
2008 has seen a record outbreak of tornadoes in the United States from California to the Midwest, from the South through the central plains, to the Appalachian states.
In January, The Environmentalist reported the University of East Anglia's prediction for a strong 2008 La Ni�a event.
"The assessment for 2008 is that there will be a strong La Ni�a event in the Pacific, which will limit the warming trend for the year (whilst still being one of the warmest years)."
The La Ni�a phenomenon is an upwelling of colder waters resulting in a change in ocean temperature that causes a shift in the jet stream, reducing corresponding climate temperature. A NOAA study from October, 1999, still referenced on their site, which uses data from 1950 through 1996, concluded there was no tornadic connection to the El Ni�o/La Ni�a event. Since then, however, Joseph Schaefer, Director of NOAA's National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, according to this February MSNBC report, has revised his position:
Tornadoes do happen in February, but a study by Schaefer two years ago found that winter tornadoes in parts of the South occur more frequently and are stronger when there is a La Ni�a.
The La Ni�a connection was also cited in a Purdue University study reported in Science Daily (also from 1999), this one with data from 1916 to 1996, which offered the intriguing possibility that the La Ni�a event could be traced to a geographical shift in tornadic activity:
"Though the study provides little reason to expect more or fewer tornadoes overall, the findings show clear evidence of geographical shifts in tornado activity within the United States when comparing strong El Ni�o years to La Ni�a years," says [Ernest] Agee, professor of atmospheric sciences at Purdue who has studied tornadoes for more than 30 years.
The La Ni�a event, the opposite of the El Ni�o phenomenon, has long been associated with intensified hurricane seasons (a prediction for the 2008 season), colder winters (i.e. China) and, as evidenced by recent events, with increased tornadic activity:
La Ni�a, which means "the little girl," is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific, as compared to El Nino, which is characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the same waters. A La Ni�a event, the subtropical jet -- the jet stream that brings warm moist air from the south -- shifts to the far north, bringing an influx of warmth and moisture to these regions, and increasing the odds for tornadoes.
The geographical shift theory supports this University of Oklahoma assessment from February, 2008, after large scale tornadoes touched down in Kentucky and Tennessee:
February tornadoes usually pop up near the Gulf Coast, not in Kentucky or Tennessee, said University of Oklahoma meteorology professor Howard Bluestein.
Bluestein went on to cite that one factor in the storms' intensity was the record warmth in Oklahoma (84 degrees) which the storm moved through on its "path of destruction."
In February, 97 weather stations broke or tied temperature records in Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky -- the hardest-hit states.
Tornadoes are a natural phenomenon that have existed long prior to climate change. They are the product of specific conditions, upper level lows, strong winds, geography, the earth's rotation, the confluence of warm and cold fronts, etc.
The La Ni�a event is also a natural phenomenon with a recorded history prior to any reports of climate change. What begs further investigation, given the record February temperatures in the effected areas, is whether a change in sea level due to melting ice may have had or will have an impact on the phenomena and/or if the warmer air produced by climate change has intensified the process by which dangerous storms that may be related to La Ni�a are created.
The La Ni�a event is expected to stay strong through the end of the year.

Harry Potter Actor Killed Outside a London Pub
Rob Knox who plays the role of student Marcus Belby in the upcoming Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince was fatally stabbed outside Metro bar in Southeast London on Saturday morning.
The BBC reported that Knox, 18, was allegedly trying to defend his younger brother Jamie from a man armed with knives.
According to the BBC, as of Monday, police were still questioning a 21-year-old male suspect.
